I think he likes to establish a running game and then pass to get the defense off balance. Defenses get antsy when you're in the red zone and if you've got a great running game going then players aren't going to think pass. Coaches might see it coming but most players aren't that smart.

I don't think even Colley himself has a legit explanation for that air-ran but I will say he seems to like to use Ryan Jones awfully well in goal line situations now...back when they had blaine and all those 270+ lineman though they would do some odd things in the red zone especially when they were playing lesser teams...they also tried to pass in the state semi finals against giles in the red zone which probably cost them a trip to the state championship that year...im guess in the 4 years that blaine and tim were the primary ball carriers for Haysi both averaged up around 9 yards per carry which was similar to the Jones boys average but neither got nearly as many carries as they did which escapes rationality.
I love how people blame the coaching when a team loses and when a team plays great it all about the players and a little about the coach, maybe...none of you guys could do what coach colley has done at haysi. He knows more football than all the people on this forum combined, and yes that is more than me haha. Does he make a wrong decision, of course...but don't all coaches...but what determines a good coach is how many good decisions are made to make up for the few bad ones and coach colley has had so many more good decisions than bad...in relation to the throwing the ball on the goaline rather than running...why not?? in a few cases it may not work but how many times has he chosen to throw the ball in the red zone and had touchdowns??...but when you guys coach for 22 years have nearly 200 wins, 2 regional titles, and 10+ district titles...then you can talk crap about how another person coach's

I didn't see anyone really knocking Colley that bad just pointing out some facts thats all...truth is the truth. As I have mentioned before Colley has a brilliant offensive mind and has alot of career wins but does that mean he doesn't make mistakes? Ofcourse not! He has been blessed with an immense amount of talented players in his career at Haysi and he has done well with that talent. I feel like he is a coach that wins when he has talent and when he doesn't well he usually doesn't do that well. I do feel this years game with Honaker was an instance where he had more talented players but didnt get the win...thats unfortunate, maybe he will turn the tables next time...and once again gobigred if you will read most of the posts here your opinion and thoughts doesn't hold much water here because you don't have much to back it up with as a continued anonymous poster.
well most everyone there are few people...coach colley, bill walsh, jim tressel and well that is probably about it

People who continuously toot their own horn the way you do are obviously compensating for some other deficiencies...if you are as brilliant as you say then you would feel no need to reinforce that time after time on a high school football message board...and I would venture to say the reason you don't say who you are is because you know if you did then people would no longer would take you seriously, not that they do anyway.
I for one am not knocking COlley but i will agree a lot with James that he wins when he is supposed to but nevers wins when he should not or doesnt do it often, never is a long time i guess if i am quoting myself. I feel like he is a very intelligent man on offense that has nothing much to do with the Defensive side or at least most of the time it does not look that way, i may be wrong there. But Gobigred you have to realize that what makes a great coach is not the stats or the win that is just part of it, and yes it does have something to do with it just not all of it. The real thing to me that makes a coach is when you take what you got and it is not as good as you once had but us adjust to your personel and beat teams that you should not beat and you make kids better that really arent all that good, as is and has been the case with Rick Goodman at Council, has Colley ever done that well i cant say he has because of all the talent he has had. Should he be slammed for having all that talent heck no but should he be praised as highly as he is for doing so good as a coach, i do not think so. But hey if you want to talk about people bieng biased to kin folk you might be being biased yourself, or could you. I do not think you can blame a loss souly on a coach or give him credit souly for a win, but some of the blame and credit has to be handed to him in each circumstance. I do think it is stupid to throw 3 times in the red zone when you have bulldozed your way to get there. But hey i am not a coach with 200 wins and 2 regional championship and however many district titles........but neither are many of us here now are we?
Seems to me if you hvae talent (more than the other team) than a lot of coaches can win games. Colley seems to be really good at taking players that might not have a lot of talent but putting them in positions so that they excel. THat is what I have always thought anyway.
